So I was in a bag store for like 45 minutes one day just trying crossbody bags and shoulder bags.
On. Off. On. Off.
Walking around.
Taking them off.
Putting them back on.
The worker kept asking if I needed help and I was like “no I’m just having an existential crisis about bags.”
I literally could not decide.
A crossbody bag felt good on my body and I had my hands free which seemed important.
But a shoulder bag had more space and looked more like an adult bag.
I couldn’t commit.
So I left and spent the next week borrowing bags from friends.
Borrowed a crossbody from one friend for a few days.
Borrowed a shoulder bag from another friend for a few days.
And THEN I could actually figure out which one I liked.
Turns out I’m way more active than I thought I was.
I need my hands free.
Crossbody wins for my life.
The Hands-Free Thing
Okay so this is huge and I didn’t realize how much it mattered until I borrowed the crossbody.
With a shoulder bag on my shoulder, I can’t really do anything with my hands.
Like if I need to carry something I have to hold it or put it on my other shoulder.
With a crossbody across my body, my hands are completely free.
I can carry stuff. I can use my phone. I can exist without worrying about my bag.
This is more important than I realized.
The Capacity Thing
Shoulder bags usually have more space.
Like I can fit a water bottle, a book, snacks, whatever in a shoulder bag.
Crossbody bags are sometimes a little more limited.
Depends on the style but generally shoulder bags hold more.
If you carry a lot of stuff, shoulder bag.
If you carry minimal stuff, crossbody is fine.
Comfort After Wearing For Hours
Crossbody bags distribute the weight across your body.
So even if you’re carrying a lot, it doesn’t all sit on one shoulder.
Shoulder bags put all the weight on one shoulder.
After like three hours my shoulder aches.
After six hours it’s actual pain.
Crossbody bags don’t do that.
The weight is just… on your body in a balanced way.
If you wear a bag for hours every day, crossbody is more comfortable.
How They Look
Crossbody bags look casual.
Like you’re being functional.
Shoulder bags can look more polished depending on the style.
If you’re going somewhere nice, shoulder bag looks better.
If you’re being casual, either works.
Security Thing
With a crossbody bag across your body, someone can’t just grab it from your shoulder and run.
With a shoulder bag, it’s just sitting there.
If you’re in crowded places or cities, crossbody is safer.
Access To Your Stuff
Shoulder bags are in front of you. Easy to access.
Crossbody bags are on your side. You have to move them around to get stuff out.
So if you need frequent access to your bag, shoulder bag is easier.
If you just put stuff in and leave it, crossbody is fine.
What I Actually Did
I couldn’t decide so I bought… both.
I have a crossbody from COS (€80) and a shoulder bag from Mansur Gavriel (€120).
I use the crossbody like 80% of the time.
Because I’m active and I need hands free and I’m always carrying stuff.
I use the shoulder bag when I’m going somewhere nicer and I want more capacity.
Like if I’m meeting friends for dinner and I want to bring a sweater or a book or whatever.
But day to day, crossbody.
It’s just more practical for my life.
Real Specific Bags That Are Okay
Crossbody: COS makes good crossbody bags around €80-100. Or Everlane (€70-90). Both solid.
Shoulder bag: Mansur Gavriel (€100-150) is beautiful and has good capacity. Or just any structured shoulder bag from a decent brand.
Don’t buy cheap bags. They fall apart. Don’t spend too much. It’s a bag not a car.
€60-150 range is fine.
